LWD Design Tool Review Tuesday: Glitz Rollerdoodles

For today’s Tool Review Tuesday, I decided to review the Glitz Rollerdoodle.  I chose a Giant Rollerdoodle with a flora pattern and two Tiny Rollerdoodles; lace and feathers.

The surfaces used are watercolor paper, white cardstock, a manila folder cut to an ATC shape, and Ranger Glossy Cardstock.  I am using Ranger Black Archival Ink, Versamark Embossing Ink, paint, and black embossing powder. 


For this first experiment, I used the Giant Floral Rollerdoodle and watercolor paper.  First, make sure you ink the Rollerdoodle very well.  Run it back and forth several times.  I found with the Giant ones, you need to run it across the page in a slow motion while pressing down slightly.  The watercolor paper was a little too rough I think and the image didn’t transfer very well.

Next, I used the Tiny Feather Rollerdoodle and plain white cardstock.  It worked very well, had nice definition, and I found I could get two rolls out of one inking.

Onward!  The next test was with the Tiny Lace Rollerdoodle and an ATC cut from a manila folder.  As you can see, I didn’t get it rolled too straight (understatement of the year) but it did well.  For the middle section, you can see where I didn’t apply even pressure.  This is a consideration with these rolling stamps.

How about a Tiny Feather Rollerdoodle and Ranger Glossy Cardstock?  Not too good a match.  Due to the extreme slickness of the paper, the image smeared in several spots.  Not good if you are going for a crisp, clean image. 

Now for some messy fun.  I took some regular acrylic paint and ran both the Giant Floral Rollerdoodle and the Tiny Lace Rollerdoodle through it and then across my watercolor paper.  As you can see, it’s very blob-y.  Not a good look unless you are going for this look.  I can see it working for different applications.

And now for the big surprise.  It work AWESOME with Versamark Embossing Ink and embossing powder.  I only inked the Rollerdoodle up once and got two good lines of stamping.  The definition is nice and crisp.  This was the biggest shock.  I didn’t think it would work so well.
Now for an overview:  I found the Tiny Rollerdoodles easier to use and roll than the Giant Rollerdoodle.  There was some issue with applying even pressure, but I think that was user error more than anything.  They work better on smooth paper with some tooth (card stock, manila folder) than rougher paper (watercolor paper) and much better than a slick paper (glossy cardstock).

They also work well on cardboard and chipboard.  I used the Giant Floral Rollerdoodle here over a gesso’d, misted, cardboard background.  It was inked with Distress Ink in a color similar to the background.  I found it worked well and accented this album page perfectly.
In conclusion, I like them.  They work well and are perfect for borders, accents, and backgrounds.

Time Flies, But “Bee” Yourself

Good morning everyone!  Marilyn here today to share another journal page for my Basically Bare 6×6 Artful Binder.  This time, I used one of the Watercolor Paper Expansion Pack pages that are available for this system

This front of the page is very simple (remember, journal pages don’t have to be complicated).  I sprayed the background with Art Anthology Timeless Colorations, then stenciled some clocks using Fern Leaf Colorations.  I then stenciled over a few of the clocks with white Texture Magic and sprinkled on some embossing powder.  Finally, I stamped “Time Flies” in Black Soot Distress Ink.

I painted a set of Basically Bare Basic Wings with Art Anthology Figi Velvet and attached them to a clock face.  Simple, but this page reflects my thoughts at that time.

For the backside of the page, I first sprayed the Watercolor Paper with Art Anthology Waimea Bay Colorations, then stenciled a couple of large clocks using brown Texture Magic.  The chenille bee is attached to a Basically Bare Gear I painted with Art Anthology Black Jacket Sorbet.  I stamped “Bee Yourself” on a scrap of cardstock and then inked it with Wild Honey & Squeezed Lemonade Distress Ink.  Since time flies, you have to always “bee” yourself (yep, as cheesy as it is, I used a play-on-words).

I first painted the Basically Bare Dress Form with Art Anthology Desire Velvet then covered it with black and red eyelash yarn.  I cut the stand off the Dress Form and then working from bottom to top, glued on strands of the eyelash yarn.

I now have another journal page to add to my Basically Bare 6×6 Artful Binder.  These pages are so great!  They can be removed one at a time to work on since they are ring bound, which makes them really easy to spray, paint, stencil, whatever!  You don’t have to worry about overspray getting on your other pages.

LWD Design Team Showcase: Graphic 45 Couture Paper, Chipboard, & Stickers

Good morning everyone!  Today I'm going to share a card I made using a Jumbo Tag and Graphic 45's Couture Paper, Chipboard, and Stickers.  Graphic 45 is one of my favorite paper companies and their paper and accessories are fun to use.





Take a Giant Craft Tag (#12 size) and fold it over until the bottom edge abuts the grommet hole.  Score with a bone folder.  



Now cut a piece of paper to fit the short fold and attach.  I used a tape runner I had laying around.  This is really too much “paper attaching” to use a wet glue.

Continue cutting and gluing until all sections of the folded tag (um, card) have been covered.



Cover the outside fold of your card with a complementary tape.  I like this one since it showed different styles of shoes and fit the Couture paper quite well.



Now for the fun part!  Grab your Couture paper, stickers, and chipboard and start combining elements.  I fussy-cut some of the images out from the paper pages.



Once your satisfied with your arrangement, glue or stick everything down.  I used foam squares on the woman at the bottom of the left page to make her stand out.



Don’t forget the front!  I attached some of the Graphic 45 stamp stickers to the front of my tag card to make it more dimensional and ran a boarder from the sticker sheet around the top and bottom. 

Now you have a card to give to someone “just because”!

Split Personality Art Journaling

Here’s a couple of Art Journal pages I did for Gauche Alchemy.  I’m just getting started, but oh what fun they were!

I called it Split Personality because these journal pages make me look like I have a split personality, they are so different. One side bright, attention grabbing, and colorful, the other more neutral and calm. While it didn’t completely hold true for today’s project, my journal pages are usually created by trying out new products, techniques or whatever catches my fancy. Being a newbie at art journaling, I found this approach works best for me. Today’s were a combination of getting some stuff off my chest and the desire to try out some new stencils and pastes.

My journal is the larger 11 3/8″ x 8 1/4 one made by Dylusions. For the page on the left, I used the 9″ x 12″ Dylusions Flower Medley stencil to start but on the right I just sprayed on some Art Anthology mists as a starting point. I then just let things come as they may. Yes, sometimes I throw everything but the kitchen sink at a page and see what sticks!

After I sprayed the stencil, since I didn’t lay down a background, the flowers were white (the color of the page) and in definite need of color. Out came a bunch of Distress Paints and Art Anthology Velvets, as bright as I had. I painted the flowers in alternating colors, not paying too close attention to staying in the lines. I then stenciled a crown using Studio 490 gold embossing paste and a Tattered Angels mask. This was followed by more embossing paste in white using a couple of TCW stencils and then some text stamping in black.

The frog (I LOVE frogs!) is courtesy of VivaLasVegaStamps. I used a couple of napkins from the Napkin Art Kit, roughly trimming around the edges of the images I wanted and adhering them the page with Collage Pauge, brushing some of it over the top of the napkin pieces to seal and protect them. The white part of the napkin disappears into the page, so there is no need to fussy-cut. I then journaled “Let your flowers bloom, let your garden grow” with black Sharpie and outlined the page with faux stitching using a white gel pen.

For this page, I was in a totally different frame of mind. I misted the page with Art Anthology Colorations then grabbed a couple more of my TCW stencils and misted them in contrasting but muted colors. I used a Prima Turkish Grunge stencil with Studio 490 silver embossing paste (I LOVE embossing paste of any kind), then took a couple of Dylusions stamps inked with sepia archival ink and had fun stamping all over the page. The circles I stamped were then colored in with a white gel pen and I outlined the wavy stamp at the top of the page with a black Sharpie. Finally, I added a bright piece of napkin from the Napkin Art Kit, again adhering and sealing it with Collage Pauge. I find the Collage Pauge doesn’t stay sticky like Modge Podge does (I live in a very humid climate) and my pages don’t stick together.

Food for thought - Here is something that struck me while creating these pages: I really wasn’t loving how they looked. But, due to circumstances, I had to take a two-week break from playing with them and when I started back, they looked a lot better than I remembered. So, I guess sometimes we need to just step back from our art to gain perspective. I realized I was concentrating so much on making the pages perfect that I was losing what I set out to do: create a journal page from the heart, not one from the mind, and to have fun doing it. Now, go grab yourself a couple of stencils, some inks and stamps, and just have fun.

LWD Design Team Showcase: Dylusions Journal, Echo Park Reflections Collection, & Cosmo Cricket Snowflake Wood Charms

Hello everyone.  I thought I’d share a journal page with you today.  No, I’m no expert at this (try rank amateur), but journal pages are fun to do and allow you to experiment with different products while allowing freedom of expression. 

This week, I had a ton of new products I wanted to try:  The Dylusions Large Journal, the Echo Park Reflections Collection (Christmas-themed), some Cosmo Cricket Snowflake Wood Charms (these are awesome!), and a couple of stencils by Heidi Swapp and Color Box.  So, let’s see what I did.

So, here’s the journal.  It’s a nice size with the pages measuring 11-3/8” x 8-1/4”.  The outside is sturdy and the elastic bank keeps it closed.

To start, I gesso’d the pages to keep my color from bleeding through, since I’ve very heavy handed when it comes to paints, inks, and mists.  After that dried, I laid down some color, using paints from the Lumiere range by Jacquard.  I used a baby wipe to smear and blend the colors somewhat.  A damp rag would also work.

 

Next, I stenciled in a background using the Heidi Swapp Confetti stencil, a Color Box Jumbled Art Screen, and Distress Inks in Black Soot and Picked Raspberry.  The blender tool by Ranger works really good for applying these inks to stencils.

Okay, I forgot to take a picture of this step, though it’s obvious is subsequent pictures.  I took a selection of seasonal stamps and randomly stamped them over my page using  black Ranger Archival Ink and Stormy Sky Distress Ink.

I then took a couple of pages from the new Echo Park Reflections Collection and trimmed a border for the left side of the page from one sheet and the 24 card from another.  I adhered these to the page using my Xyron sticker machine.

Next, I scattered Cosmo Cricket Snowflake Wooden Charms across the page in a random pattern.  I literally just kind of threw them onto the paper and glued most where they landed.  I liked the color they were so I left them bare.  I also took a piece of Tim Holtz Tinsel Twine and ran it across the top and partially down the right side using Glossy Accents to glue it to the page.  I then took my Lace Glitz Roller Doodle and randomly rolled it in lines across and down the page.

Though it’s hard to see in the picture, I sprayed the entire page with Perfect Pearls Pearl mist so it would be shimmery.

So, here’s my page.  I like the way the colors turned out and it seems very festive to me.  However, something just didn’t look quite right.  It was missing something.

Soooooo, I dug around in the pieces and parts laying on my desk and found the negative of a Sizzix Alterations Tree Line die cut.  I had used the actual die cut for another project, but the negative it left had several tree shapes that were very useable.  I trimmed them up, added some Ice Stickles for snow, and AT LAST!  my page was done.

So, don’t ever discount the bits and parts left over from another project.  Look at them with a critical eye and see if they can’t be used for something else.  The leftovers from my previous project fit perfectly into my page.

Now, art journaling is not a science.  In a lot of instances, its beauty is in the eye of the creator.  What I hoped to show you today was just how easy it can be to art journal.  A few paints, some stencils, inks, maybe some stamps, and you have all you need.  And in case you are wondering, for me, an art journal page is never done!

I know, I’ve been remiss in posting to my poor blog lately.  I share my LWD projects but rarely anything else.  Well in honor of Halloween, here’s a canvas I did with some Basically Bare, Art Anthology, and Authentique (with a little Tim Holtz thrown in – gotta have that!).

LWD Design Team Showcase: Pin Up Queen, Day of the Heads, & This Old House Dylusions Stamp Sets

Good morning everyone!  Today I want to share with you a tag I made using three of the new Dylusions Stamp Sets:  Pin Up Queen, Day of the Heads, & This Old House.  I just LOVE these stamp sets!  They are very versatile and exceedingly fun to work with.

First, I stamped  the Pin Up Queen body onto a piece of card stock, along with one of the skulls from Day of the Heads using Distress Ink in Black Soot.  I colored her and the skull with Copics in YR68 & G02, LePlumes in E852, Y625, & R808, and finally Spectrum Noir in EB1.  Then, I carefully cut out just on the edge of the black line left by the stamp.  Yes, it was a bit fussy, but I loved the edge I got.  If a little white shows, running a Black Soot Distress Ink pad down the edge will help (but be careful, you don’t want a smudged edge).

Take a #10 manila tag and stamp the face house from the Dylusions This Old House set using Distress Ink in Black Soot and then emboss with clear embossing powder.  You want to use a #10 manila tag because these stamps are fairly large.  Now stamp it again on a piece of scrap paper and cut out slightly inside the line - this becomes your mask for the next step.  Trimming the mask just inside the stamped line keeps you from leaving a halo around your stamped image during the next step.

Position mask over the embossed stamped house and spray with Dylusions Mists in Squeezed Orange, Lemon Zest, and White Linen.  Remove the mask (save for future use).  Dry with your heat gun.

Use the following Distress Markers to color your house:  Barn Door, Vintage Photo, Brushed Corduroy, Pine Needle, and Mustard Seed.

Stamp and cut out the “sassy britches” saying from the Dylusions Say It How It Is stamp set.  Adhere the body, head, and words to the tag.  VOILA! You’re done!
